At Village Academy, each student is required to complete a Capstone Project, which is a long-term research project beginning freshman year of Upper School. The project is designed to be an original, creative investigation leading to new insights, conclusions, and recommendations appropriate to the students’ chosen topic. The Capstone Project furthers the School’s mission of helping students become global citizens by building connections with the local, national, and international community.

This documented research project must demonstrate knowledge of the student’s chosen subject, experience in investigation, and the resulting benefit to others. The emphasis is on learning by engaging in real-world tasks that have authentic consequences, and then reflecting on these experiences over time.
During their freshman year, each student selects a topic of interest and conducts three years of hands-on, industry-specific research and community service under the guidance of a Capstone advisor. By their junior year, students will complete the research portion of the project, leaving their senior year to participate in internships and service experiences. In May, seniors present their research to a juried panel of peers, faculty, and experts from the community, and receive feedback regarding their final project. Upon completion of the Capstone Project, students have the applied experience and research background required for success in higher education, business, and the world.
