The Village Academy Middle School Program (Grades 6-8) promotes excellence in academics, builds self-esteem, enhances life skills, and encourages citizenship and global awareness in all students.
The program strengthens the foundation established in Lower School, and prepares students for a smooth transition into the unique challenges of Upper School. Unlike other middle school programs that pressure students to accept the responsibility for their own learning, Village Academy faculty and staff encourage students to become active participants, establish personal goals, participate in cooperative, project-based learning, develop school-life balance skills, and undergo moral and character building experiences. Middle School remains a safe place to make mistakes without fear of repercussions, learn from those mistakes, and try again. The student-driven academic core subjects of the program include English, math, social studies, science, world languages, fine and performing arts, physical education, and computer technology.
Outside of the classroom, Middle School students are able to participate in a number of clubs and organizations, social activities, cultural events, athletic activities, artistic performances, volunteer opportunities, and a peer mediation program. The school counselor works with students on developing life skills, and students attend workshops that help develop study and test-taking skills, honor and integrity in academics, and time management skills. In eighth grade, students begin to meet with the college counselor to discuss expectations for Upper School academics and college entrance requirements. Through these experiences, students are able to further refine and pursue academic passions and to prepare for their Upper School academic career.
The Advancement through Mastery approach continues to challenge each student individually based on his or her strengths and talents.
