The Upper School curriculum (Grades 9-12) is designed to promote college readiness and develop life-long, collaborative learners and independent thinkers with a broad global perspective.
The program continues to strengthen the students’ developing critical and analytical skills while allowing them to identify and pursue their individual talents and passions. Additionally, the Upper School program fosters strong leadership and organizational skills, encourages positive risk-taking, and allows students to take responsibility for their education through student-directed class scheduling.
The core of the academic program consists of courses in English, social studies, mathematics, world languages (Latin, German, Spanish, and Chinese), technology, physical education, electives, Advanced Placement courses, independent studies, and the fine and performing arts. The Advancement through Mastery approach challenges each student individually based on his or her strengths. Students can be scheduled into classes based on individual challenge levels that keep them interested and engaged.
Upper school students select one of four college preparatory graduation endorsements: Mathematics/Science, Performing/Fine Arts, Humanities, or Traditional College Preparatory, that provide a focus for upper school course selections. The Post Secondary Education Options Program (PSEOP) offers students the opportunity to experience advanced course work in a university environment while obtaining both Upper School and college course credit. College counseling begins in middle school and is expanded through each year of upper school providing students and parents with individualized attention to college planning, scholarship application, and program evaluation in order to facilitate investigation of the next steps in academic career preparation.
